House Insulation

I remember growing up in a two story house having my bedroom located upstairs with a large window overlooking the entire street seemed like prime real estate when we bought the house and my sister and I fought over who got which room. I felt like I had won since I got the room she so desperately wanted. What I didn’t realize however, was that the front room with that big bay window overlooking the neighborhood took in the most sun. It was always so hot. Living in Arizona where nine months of the year are like an oven made my life miserable. Sleeping at night was difficult. I couldn’t ever cool off or get comfortable. If I turned down the air conditioning and my room was finally at optimal temperature, my family was frozen solid. In the winter the heat could be running all night long and I’d be shivering under three blankets. Why does this happen and what can we do about it?

It never fails, every house has that one room that seems to get too hot in the warmer months and doesn’t retain warmth in the cooler months. It can be incredibly frustrating trying to solve the problem. But why does it occur in the first place? Homes are built with insulation inside their walls to provide a way to maintain and regulate the temperature inside. Now the problem is that homes are full of windows to provide natural light and to make the space feel larger and less closed off. These windows are simply panes of glass with absolutely no insulation. Windows create voids or areas where solar energy can conveniently find its way in during those hot summers raising the rooms temperature. In the winter warm air can escape through your windows causing a drop in temperature in your home. It’s like filling a cup up with a small hole in it. You’re never going to be able to fill the cup to the optimal level if the cup isn’t properly sealed up. That’s the same with your windows.

Now that we know one cause of temperature irregularities in your home, what can we do to solve the issue? It’s actually an easy fix. One way to help insulate your windows and better regulate room temperature is by applying solar window films to the glass. Solar window films are window films that apply directly to your glass from corner to corner and are sealed off with a caulking to make sure you have complete coverage on your glass. The film puts a barrier between the solar energy and your room. Typically solar window films eliminate up to 80 percent of the suns energy from entering through your windows and spiking temperatures in your space. So when that sun is out and shining down, it won’t be able to fully penetrate the glass and cause heat gain like it would without window film. That can create a huge difference almost immediately. Additionally solar window films work to eliminate warm air from escaping your home when it’s cool out. Windows as we know are voids and areas where warm air can seep out, applying solar window films helps trap that warmth inside during those bitter winter months. The best part about solar window films is that they can help you save money on your energy bill too! Since your air conditioning unit won’t be working overtime to cool down the hot spots in your house mid summer or warm up the cold rooms in the winter, you will see some reduction in the total energy costs each month. Can’t beat saving money on top of finally having a room you can enjoy.
